PhonepayPlus consolidates expertise in consumer and industry issues with new Board appointments
4 December 2009
PhonepayPlus, the phone-paid services regulator, has appointed Howard Webber and Hugh Griffiths to its Board to add to both its consumer and industry expertise. The two new members will join effective of 1 January 2010.
Hugh has been at the forefront of the development of technology platforms for premium rate services, previously as the head of data products at O2 Telefonica for many years and, until very recently, working as the Director of Mobile Services for Microsoft. He has extensive experience in telecoms, media and technology across online, TV and mobile platforms.
Howard brings a wealth of experience of consumer protection to PhonepayPlus, having previously served as the Chief Executive of postal services watchdog, Postwatch, where he successfully oversaw its integration with energywatch and the Welsh, Scottish and National Consumer Councils to create Consumer Focus.
The selection process was managed by a panel comprising PhonepayPlus’ Chairman, a Board member, a representative from Ofcom and an independent assessor.
Stephen Locke, who has served on the PhonepayPlus Board for 6 years, will finish his second term on 31 December 2009. With the two new members joining, this will bring the total number of Board members up to nine.
“PhonepayPlus already has a strong Board with diverse experience but these two new appointments will serve to solidify that, and bring in new ideas and perspectives,” said Sir Alistair Graham, Chairman of PhonepayPlus.
“I’d also like to extend my gratitude to Stephen Locke whose contribution to the PhonepayPlus Board has been exemplary. He should be very proud of the work that he has done to protect consumers and build trust in phone-paid services.”
